The Essure procedure results in permanent birth control. A small, flexible device called a micro-insert is placed into each fallopian tube (the tubes the egg travels through from the ovaries to the uterus). Once the micro-inserts are in place, over a three-month period, body tissue grows into the micro-inserts, blocking the fallopian tubes. Blocking the tubes is intended to prevent sperm from reaching and fertilizing the egg, and thereby preventing pregnancy.

Achieving birthcontrol using the Essure procedure is a three-step process:
- Discuss Essure contraception with your doctor;
- Have the Essure micro-inserts implanted in the comfort of our Clinic; and
- Receive an Essure Confirmation Test three months after the insertion to confirm that your tubes are closed. The test is a special x-ray.
Advantages
Advantages of Essure include:
- No incisions are made, so no scars.
- May be performed with local anesthesia, depending on the doctor's recommendation.
- The micro-inserts do not contain or release any hormones.
- It is effective in preventing pregnancy. In clinical trials no woman became pregnant over the two years of follow-up. After three years of follow-up, Essure was 99.8% effective at preventing pregnancy..
- Recovery is fast. Typically, women are discharged 45 minutes after the procedure and most women return to normal activities between one to two days.
- Because the procedure is performed in the Clinic, you are in a familiar and comfortable environment.
- Almost all women rated their satisfaction with Essure as "good" to "excellent" at all study visits after the one-week visit.
Risks and Considerations
As with all procedures, there are some risks associated with the Essure procedure. These risks include:
- The procedure is irreversible.
- Like all methods of birth control, the Essure procedure may not be 100% effective.
- After insertion of the micro-inserts, women need to use contraception for three months.
- On occasion, the doctor may not succeed in placing the micro-inserts.
- The Essure procedure is newer than other procedures.
- Removal of the Essure micro-inserts would require surgery.
