Urinary incontinence is a common condition in women and the prevalence increases with age. Incontinence is under-reported because women are often reluctant to discuss the condition with their doctors. Less than 50% of women with urinary incontinence report it to their doctor. Untreated incontinence can lead to impaired quality of life, social isolation, depression, recurrent urinary tract infections, skin irritations, and feelings of poor health. There are numerous effective treatments for incontinence and we are here to provide the testing and to tailor the treatment for your specific problem. By doing this, one's chances of a successful outcome improves.
There are four types of urinary incontinence:
-
Stress incontinence: Caused when one coughs, laughs, or exercises. Leakage of urine with coughing is usually caused by a lack of support to the bladder or urethra.
-
Urge incontinence: Exhibited when one has the sudden urge to urinate and cannot make it to the bathroom in time. This is caused by a strong contraction of the bladder.
-
Mixed incontinence: A combination of stress and urge incontinence.
-
Overflow incontinence: Caused by the overdistention of the bladder and can be related to organ prolapse, spinal cord injury, and diabetes.
